Beautility: Beautifying water district utility boxes in the City of San Jose

The Santa Clara Valley Water District partnered with the City of San Jose to sponsor 12 murals in the TJ Martin and Jeffrey Fontana parks in Almaden Valley. The murals adorn concrete utility vaults that serve as access points to one of the most important water pipelines in our region.

Six local artists were hired to paint murals on all 12 utility vaults located in the two parks. Three community outreach meetings were conducted to present the final designs to the public, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Dec. 8 with the Martin-Fontana Parks Association to celebrate the park-beautification effort.

The artwork on the vaults were all painted with water-themed murals appropriate to the Santa Clara Valley and designed to increase awareness of water and water-related issues.

The district contribution included $1,170.92 through a sponsorship to cover the permit, inspection fee, and to have district staff assess the murals for local relevance.

  1. Thanks for the video. Martin-Fontana Parks Association has a display in the kiosk in front of the Fontana dog park with a map showing the location of each of these blocks along with a image of each one. Be sure to stop by and check them out. They are beautiful!
