Flooding has been a serious issue in Morgan Hill for decades, affecting both homes and businesses. Now, Valley Water is in the final stretch of a major construction project aimed at reducing the flood risk. The Upper Llagas Creek Flood Protection Project is reshaping over 14 miles of the creek to better protect neighborhoods, improve public safety and help the community stay resilient during future storms.
This summer, crews are widening and deepening creek channels, building underground box culverts and drainage systems, and improving bridges. These upgrades will allow the waterways to carry more stormwater during heavy rains, reducing the risk of flooding.
The project also includes environmental and infrastructure improvements. Invasive plants are being removed, and native plants will be restored to help support fish and wildlife. Overhead power lines are being moved underground to make local infrastructure stronger and more reliable.
The final phase of the project is expected to be completed by 2027. Once finished, it will provide flood protection for around 1,100 homes, 500 businesses, and over 1,300 acres of farmland in southern Santa Clara County.
