Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center Receives Multiple Awards for its Excellence

Valley Water has won two prestigious awards for its work to increase Santa Clara County’s local water supply through recycled and purified water.

In February 2022, the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center (SVAWPC) was named the Tertiary Recycled Water Plant of the Year by the Santa Clara Valley Section of the California Water Environment Association (CWEA).

The accolades continued in March 2022 when the purification center claimed victory at the state competition. The regional and state recognitions come in the plant’s first year of applying.

“We are so proud of the work our men and women do on a daily basis in and around the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center,” Valley Water Chair Pro Team John L. Varela said. “The awards given by the CWEA are well deserved and are a testament to our team’s dedication, attention to detail, and expertise in providing safe, clean water throughout Santa Clara County.”

Recycled Water Facility Supervisor Kris Filice accepts the Tertiary Recycled Water Plant of the Year award from the California Water Environmental Association on April 14, 2022.

The largest advanced water purification center in Northern California, the SVAWPC works to protect and secure our future by ensuring a safe, clean, and reliable supply of water to sustain Silicon Valley and our way of life. Using globally-proven technologies, the SVAWPC is producing a locally developed, new supply of water – advanced purified water.

The state-of-the-art facility takes secondary-treated wastewater that would be otherwise discharged into the San Francisco Bay and purifies it by using three proven purification processes: microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light disinfection. The purified water produced is then blended with the existing recycled water supply produced at the neighboring San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility to enhance its quality and expand its usage. This center exemplifies a great partnership between Valley Water, the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility, and the cities of San José and Santa Clara.
