It’s a new year and a new opportunity to create healthier habits. If you haven’t finalized your new year’s resolutions, the Santa Clara Valley Water District encourages you to add saving water to the list.
There are quite a few ways to do so as part of your everyday life. These include taking shorter showers, washing full loads of dishes and clothes, using a dishwasher instead of handwashing and plenty more here.
To help you meet your water-saving goal this year, the water district has programs and rebates available for Santa Clara County residents. A great way to get started is through our Water Wise Survey Program. Learn how your home can be more water efficient by doing a quick survey. With an outdoor and an indoor component, our program allows you the opportunity to have a trained irrigation professional do an evaluation of your irrigation system. You can also evaluate your indoor water use with a free Do-It-Yourself Water Wise Indoor Survey Kit. The kit includes a step-by-step guide for inspecting your water use and includes tools like dye tablets to detect toilet leaks and a bag to measure sink faucet and shower head flow rates.
The water district has a handy library of brief videos that will help build your skills and knowledge in using water wisely. We also recently developed a helpful guide that details how to get started, what materials you’ll need and how to perform the meter, house line and toilet leak tests. Another new tool for residents performing the various leak tests includes an online worksheet that walks you through detecting potential sources of leaks and inefficient fixtures. Residents with inefficient fixtures such as showerheads, faucet aerators, and toilet flappers can request replacements from the water district by submitting the completed online DIY survey worksheet.
