At a special board meeting on May 2, starting at 5 p.m., the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors will consider several staff recommendations that would authorize support of, and participation in, California WaterFix, the state’s proposed improvement to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta infrastructure.

The project is intended to reduce risks to water supplies from failing levees and rising seas, while improving water flow in the south Delta to protect fish. Over the last several years, the board has hosted several dozen workshops and presentations on the Bay Delta Conservation Plan and California WaterFix projects to hear updates and consider diverse perspectives.

On Oct. 17, 2017, the board voted to participate in the California WaterFix project. The participation was conditional, based on seven guiding principles. The April 10 decision of the Metropolitan Water District to finance a large portion of the project, changes the conditions of the project substantially.

The board will take up the item at a special workshop at 5 p.m. on May 2 in the boardroom at its headquarters at 5700 Almaden Expressway in San Jose.
